Fixing a Stuck Valve

Irrigation valves are remarkably reliable considering they cycle open and closed thousands of times over their lifetime. But when one gets stuck — open or closed — it can be frustrating. The good news is that most valve problems are simple fixes.

Valve Won't Open (Zone Won't Turn On)

Quick Checks First

1. Check the controller. Is the zone programmed? Is the wire connected?
2. Try manual operation. Most valves have a manual bleed screw or lever. Turn it to see if the valve opens.
3. Check the solenoid. This is the cylindrical piece on top of the valve with wires coming out. Make sure the wires are connected and not corroded.

If the Solenoid Clicks But No Water Flows

The diaphragm is probably stuck or debris is blocking the port.

1. Turn off the water supply to the system.
2. Remove the solenoid by unscrewing it from the valve body.
3. Remove the bonnet screws (the top of the valve) and lift off the bonnet.
4. Pull out the diaphragm — it's a flexible rubber disc.
5. Clean everything. Look for sand, pebbles, or debris in the valve body and ports. Clean the small bleed port hole in the diaphragm.
6. Check the diaphragm for tears, warping, or stiffness. If it's damaged, replace it (rebuild kits are under $10).
7. Reassemble in reverse order. Tighten bonnet screws evenly — snug, not tight.

Valve Won't Close (Zone Runs Constantly)

This is usually debris under the diaphragm keeping it from sealing, or a torn diaphragm.

1. Follow steps 1-7 above.
2. Pay special attention to the valve seat (the ridge the diaphragm seals against). If it's gouged or rough, the diaphragm can't seal.
3. Check the bleed screw. Make sure it's fully closed (clockwise).

When to Replace

If the valve body is cracked, the seat is damaged, or you've rebuilt it twice and it still acts up — it's time for a new valve. They're about $15-25, and your sanity is worth more than that.
