Understanding Sprinkler Nozzles

Most people obsess over sprinkler heads but forget about the nozzle — which is like buying a car and ignoring the engine. After 35 years in the business, I can tell you that nozzle selection is where most DIY installs fall short.

Types of Nozzles

Fixed Spray Nozzles

  • Pre-set patterns: full circle, half circle, quarter circle, and specialty shapes
  • Throw distance: 4-15 feet typically
  • Precipitation rate: high (about 1.5 in/hr)
  • Best for: small to medium lawn areas, flower beds, narrow strips

Adjustable Arc Nozzles

  • You set the arc from about 0° to 360°
  • Same throw and precip rate as fixed sprays
  • Best for: areas where standard arcs don't fit the shape

MP Rotator Nozzles

  • Multi-stream rotating nozzles
  • Throw distance: 8-35 feet
  • Precipitation rate: low (about 0.4 in/hr)
  • Best for: slopes, clay soil, mixed areas where you need to reduce runoff
  • Can be used on standard spray bodies

Rotor Nozzles

  • Gear-driven rotating stream
  • Throw distance: 15-50+ feet
  • Precipitation rate: about 0.5 in/hr
  • Best for: large turf areas, sports fields, commercial properties

Matched Precipitation Rate

This is critical: every nozzle on a zone should put down water at the same rate. Otherwise, some areas get soaked while others stay dry.

Manufacturers make nozzle sets with matched precipitation rates across different arcs. A quarter-circle nozzle uses one-quarter the flow of a full-circle nozzle but covers one-quarter the area — so the precipitation rate stays the same.

Always use matched precipitation rate nozzle sets within a zone.

Nozzle Performance Charts

Every nozzle has a performance chart that shows:

  • Radius (throw distance) at different pressures
  • Flow rate (GPM) at different pressures
  • Precipitation rate at different spacing configurations

Use these charts when designing your system. Don't guess — the math matters.

Wind Considerations

In windy areas:

  • Use nozzles with lower trajectories
  • Consider MP Rotators — their multi-stream pattern handles wind better than single-stream sprays
  • Tighten up your spacing by 10-15%
  • Avoid fine-mist nozzles — wind carries mist away before it hits the ground
