Symptoms

  • Multiple leaks appear when the system is first turned on in spring
  • Cracked valve bodies or backflow preventer
  • Fittings split open along seam lines

Diagnosis

Water left in the pipes froze and expanded, cracking PVC, brass fittings, and valve bodies. Damage is often extensive and hidden underground.

Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

Turn on the system zone-by-zone and map every leak you find. Write down their locations.

  2. 2

Shut off the water and make a repair plan starting from the main line and working downstream.

  3. 3

Replace cracked pipe sections with couplings (see Main Line or Lateral Line leak guides for technique).

  4. 4

Replace any cracked valves or fittings entirely.

  5. 5

Inspect the backflow preventer — freeze-cracked backflow devices must be replaced, not repaired.

  6. 6

Once all repairs are made, pressurize the system and check every joint and valve carefully.

Parts Needed

  • Schedule 40 PVC Mainline Pipe × 2
  • Class 200 PVC Lateral Pipe × 2
  • PVC Coupling × 6
  • PVC Primer & Cement × 1
  • Zone Valve × 1 — As needed for cracked valves
  • Backflow Preventer × 1 — If the existing one is cracked

Pro Tips

  • Freeze damage is often worse than it looks on the surface. Budget extra time and materials.
  • Consider having a professional do a full system audit after severe freeze damage — they can pressure-test sections you can't see.

Prevention Tips

  • Blow out your system every fall with a compressor (50-80 PSI max). This is the single most important thing you can do.
  • Insulate your backflow preventer with a freeze-protection cover.
