Sprinkler Head Won't Pop Up
A single sprinkler head that won't pop up is usually caused by debris in the riser, a broken spring, or a clogged nozzle cutting off water flow.
Symptoms
- One head stays flush with the ground when the zone runs
- You can hear water flowing but the head doesn't rise
- Other heads on the same zone work fine
Diagnosis
The internal spring or riser mechanism is likely stuck due to dirt and debris buildup, or the spring has worn out. Grass and roots can also grow over and trap the head.
Step-by-Step Repair

Turn off the irrigation system at the controller.

Dig carefully around the sprinkler head to expose the top of the body and the riser.
Use a trowel — avoid shovels that could nick the pipe. - 3
Unscrew the top cap/nozzle assembly from the sprinkler body by turning it counterclockwise.

Pull the riser (pop-up stem) straight up out of the body. Inspect the spring — it should push the riser back down firmly.

Clean all debris, dirt, and grass from the riser, spring, and inside the body. Flush with water.

If the spring is broken or weak, replace the entire head (springs aren't typically sold separately).

Reassemble the head, screw the nozzle back on, and run the zone to test.
