Sprinkler Head Won't Retract
A head that stays up after the zone shuts off is usually caused by a worn retraction spring, debris keeping it stuck in the up position, or residual pressure in the line.
Symptoms
- Sprinkler head stays popped up after the zone turns off
- Head is a tripping hazard in the yard
- Head gets hit by the mower
Diagnosis
The retraction spring inside the pop-up body is too weak or broken, or debris is preventing the riser from sliding back down. In some cases, a valve that doesn't fully close can maintain pressure.
Step-by-Step Repair

Wait a few minutes after the zone shuts off. Some heads take time to retract as pressure bleeds down.

Try gently pushing the riser down by hand. If it stays down, the spring is weak.

If it pops right back up, check the associated valve — it may be stuck partially open (see Valve Won't Close guide).

Turn off the system and unscrew the nozzle assembly. Pull the riser out and clean all parts.

If the spring is weak or broken, replace the head.

Reassemble, backfill soil, and test the zone.
