Diagnosis
Grinding = worn bearings. Rattling = loose bolts/mounting. Cavitation (rumbling) = the pump is starved for water (suction restriction or air leak).
Step-by-Step Repair

Check all mounting bolts. Tighten any that are loose. Vibration loosens bolts over time.

Check that suction and discharge pipes are properly supported and not transmitting vibration to the building.

If the sound is a grinding or scraping, the motor bearings are failing. The pump will need motor or pump replacement soon.

If the sound is a rumbling cavitation: check the suction strainer for clogs, check for suction-side air leaks, and make sure the suction pipe is the correct size (not undersized).
