Pumps Repairs

A pump that won't start is often caused by a tripped breaker, a faulty pressure switch, a bad capacitor, or loss of prime. Check electrical components before assuming the motor is dead.

If the pump motor is running but you have little or no water pressure, the pump has likely lost its prime, the impeller is damaged, or there's a suction-side leak.

A pump that rapidly cycles on and off (short cycling) is almost always caused by a waterlogged pressure tank, a faulty pressure switch, or a small leak in the system.

Unusual pump noise — grinding, rattling, or cavitation sounds — indicates worn bearings, a loose mounting, cavitation from air, or debris in the impeller.

A pump that can't draw water up from the source (won't prime) has an air leak on the suction side, a failed foot valve, or the suction lift is too high.

Pressure switch and check valve problems cause the pump to behave erratically — never shutting off, never turning on, or cycling rapidly. These components are inexpensive but require careful adjustment.
