Solenoid Buzzing or Humming

Symptoms
- Audible buzzing or humming from the valve box when the zone activates
- The zone may or may not actually turn on
- Solenoid feels warm or hot to the touch
Diagnosis
The solenoid plunger is partially stuck from debris or corrosion, or the coil is weakened and can't generate enough magnetic force.
Step-by-Step Repair

Turn off the zone at the controller.

Unscrew the solenoid from the valve body (turn counterclockwise).

Pull the plunger out of the solenoid. Clean it and the inside of the coil bore. Remove any grit or corrosion.

Inspect the plunger spring — it should compress and spring back. Replace the solenoid if the plunger is stuck or the coil is discolored from overheating.

Use a multimeter to check the solenoid coil resistance: 20-60 ohms is normal for 24VAC solenoids. Open or very low readings mean a bad coil.

Reinstall the solenoid and test. If it still buzzes, replace with a new solenoid of the same brand/voltage.

- Most 24VAC solenoids are cross-compatible between major brands. In a pinch you can swap one in from a different manufacturer.
