Valve Won't Open
A valve that won't open — even manually — usually has a stuck or torn diaphragm, or the water supply to the valve is shut off.
Chat with The Sprinkler Guy directly and get real-time help on your repair.
Symptoms
- No water comes out of any head on the zone
- Even the manual bleed screw doesn't activate the valve
- You can hear a faint click from the solenoid but nothing happens
Diagnosis
The diaphragm inside the valve is stuck closed due to debris, a torn diaphragm, or the upstream supply is shut off.
Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Verify the main water supply to the irrigation system is turned on.
- 2
Locate the valve (usually in a valve box). Remove the valve box lid.
- 3
Try opening the valve manually by turning the solenoid a quarter turn counterclockwise (or opening the bleed screw).
- 4
If that doesn't work, shut off the water supply. Remove the screws holding the valve bonnet (top cover).
- 5
Lift off the bonnet and remove the diaphragm and spring. Inspect for tears, debris, or mineral buildup.
Take a photo before disassembly so you remember the orientation. - 6
Clean all parts. If the diaphragm is torn or stiff, replace it with a matching diaphragm kit.
- 7
Reassemble the valve in reverse order. Make sure the diaphragm seats flat with no wrinkles.
- 8
Turn the water back on and test both manual and electronic activation.
Parts Needed
- •Zone Valve (or diaphragm rebuild kit) × 1 — Full valve if diaphragm kit unavailable
Pro Tips
- Diaphragm rebuild kits are available for most major valve brands for about $8-12 — much cheaper than a full valve.
- If the valve is more than 10 years old, consider replacing the entire valve rather than rebuilding.
Prevention Tips
- Install a filter/strainer upstream of valves if you have dirty water or well water.
